European Teachers, and the visible raising of the standard of female education. The latter result has been especially made prominent by the fact that several Chinese girls' schools in the Colony, where all local schools, English and Chinese, boys' schools and girls' schools, can annually compete with each other in a friendly manner, have added the subjects of Arithmetic and the Chinese classical language to their program for the express purpose of qualifying their pupils for entering the annual competition for Belilios medals and prizes.

As regards the education of boys, the Trustees have lately made special efforts to turn the rather desultory sort of teaching given in the secondary boys-schools of the Colony into the distinct channel of commercial education. The annual examinations conducted by the Trustees of the Belilios Fund are the only arena in the Colony for emulation.

As the Government has an interest in these Trust Funds (at least in Trust No. 1), evidenced by the repeated publication in the Government Gazette (1880, 1881, 1883, 1884, and 1889) of Trust Deeds and Regulations made by the Trustees, I submit the above statement in the belief that it is a subject deserving of the notice of the Government.

I have &c.

(Signed) E. J. Eitel, Inspector of Schools.
